Coryell County has combined Pretrial Service (personal bond) and Indigent Defense into one department. However, the roles of Pretrial Service (personal bond) and Indigent Defense are significantly different. The primary purpose of the Pretrial Service (personal bond) Department is to provide a service to those who would normally be released on bond, but for lack of financial ability. The primary purpose of bond is to insure that the defendant will appear in court as instructed. However, public safety and the defendant’s safety are always primary concerns when considering their release. Guidelines for release on a personal bond are outlined in the Coryell County Pretrial Service Guidelines which were approved February 1, 2013.
The decision on whether to grant or deny a Personal Bond is within the sole discretion of the Court. The Pretrial Services Office will interview, evaluate and recommend Personal Bonds in appropriate cases. The Pretrial Services Department will write bonds within the approved guidelines. Any bond request that does not fall within the approved guidelines must have the approval of the appropriate Judge/Court.
